let me start with my first topic which might be useful for atleast some of you or ur close ones.
back pain may be due to inflammation of any one or more of the components of back and rarely due to a reffered pain.
what are the components of back?
a) Bone b) soft tissues
what are the bony components?
1. spine ( vertebral canal ).
2. joints of the spine.
what are the parts of a vertebral segment??
a vertebral segment is two adjacent vertebrae and the tissues which connect them. ie: two vertebral bodies, the pedicles, the laminae, the spinous process, the inter vertebral disc, various ligaments that anchor the vertebrae like annulus, interspinous ligaments, ligamentum flavum, anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments, and facet joints and its capsule.
what are the structures that pass through the spinal canal?
spinal cord with the dura, arachnoid and pial coverings, CS Fluid in which these structures are suspended, arteries and veins.
what are the common pathologies which can percipitate back pain?
inflammation of any of the above components, arthritis of the joints including sacro iliac joints.
prolapse of the intervertebral disc compressing the nerve roots at its outlet from the spinal canal ie: neural foramen.
neoplasms arising from any of the components especially that of bone.
vascular insufficiency due to canal stenosis both congenital and acquired
instability of various ligaments leading on to abnormal movements, spondoilolisthesis both congenital and acquired.
trauma to the spine like fall from height or road traffic accident.
what is referred pain?
it is pain felt at a different anatomical region due to same neurological distribution. ex: back pain may be felt due to pathologies of the pelvic components like uterus or inta abdominal components like kidney.
